Nigeria: Senate Condemns Students' Abduction in Borno, Oyo, Promises State Police Soon
Bamidele said 87 students and teachers were abducted in 24 hours and urged state police and stronger school protection measures.
- On Friday, suspected gunmen abducted 45 students and teachers in Oyo State, while Boko Haram insurgents kidnapped 42 others in Borno State; Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele condemned the 87 total abductions on Sunday, describing them as attacks on Nigeria's future.
- Bamidele, Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, stated these kidnappings demonstrate the urgent need to establish state police, arguing that decentralized policing would strengthen the country's security architecture.
- The Senate Leader urged governments to fully implement the Safe School Initiative as an interim protection measure, addressing the estimated 18.3 million out-of-school children, while a 13-member ad hoc committee investigates the utilization of $30 million earmarked for the program.
- "The process will soon be concluded at the National Assembly," Bamidele stated regarding constitutional amendments for state police, adding that the chamber will also deliberate on amending the Terrorism Act when plenary resumes on June 2.
- Once the National Assembly completes the proposal, it must be transmitted to State Houses of Assembly for approval, a step requiring support from two-thirds of state legislatures before state police can officially come into effect.
