Sen. Ted Cruz calls for impeachment of judge who gave attempted Kavanaugh assassin 8 years
Attorney General Pam Bondi and DOJ prosecutors argue the eight-year sentence for the attempted assassination downplays the threat to judicial independence and public safety.
- On Friday, U.S. District Judge Deborah Boardman sentenced Nicholas John Roske to eight years in federal prison after he pleaded guilty earlier this year.
- Boardman explained during sentencing that she considered Roske's newly-declared transgender identity and cited President Donald Trump's executive order on transgender inmate placement.
- Prosecutors detailed that Roske flew from Los Angeles to Virginia, took a taxi to Chevy Chase, Maryland, and law enforcement found a firearm, tactical gear, a knife, and two magazines with 10 rounds each.
- Attorney General Pam Bondi said the Department of Justice will appeal the sentence and Republican senators Ted Cruz and Tom Cotton called for investigations or impeachment of Judge Boardman.
- He has already served three years and could be eligible for release in about three more years, while experts noted impeachment requires a House majority and a two-thirds Senate vote.
