Moulton Challenges Markey Over Age as Young Democrats Split
Moulton says Markey’s AI answer shows the need for younger leadership as the 80-year-old senator defends his record and supporters split over experience.
- U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton is challenging Senator Markey in Tuesday's Democratic primary, arguing the 80-year-old incumbent is too old to address modern challenges confronting younger generations.
- Moulton seized on Markey's debate stumble over artificial intelligence platforms, telling him: "We need a new generation of leaders to regulate these technologies." He called the response "potentially disqualifying."
- Molly Blander, an 18-year-old Tufts University freshman, cited Moulton's work establishing 988 as the national suicide and crisis lifeline as evidence of modern solutions. "Social media has created a modern mental health problem, so we need modern solutions," Blander said.
- Conversely, supporters like 21-year-old Abby Shadden point to Markey's 50-year record and co-authorship of the Green New Deal. Milan van Dam, 17, argues leadership is "less about an age on a Wikipedia page" than ideas and consistency.
- Addressing the technology debate, Markey emphasized that establishing legislative safeguards matters more than familiarity with specific AI products. "It doesn't make any difference whether it's called Siri or it's called Claude," Markey said.
