Semaglutide extends lifespan and slows physiological aging in healthy mice

The drug improved muscle and memory measures and added nearly 100 days to median lifespan in treated animals, researchers said.

  • An NIH-funded study published in Nature shows the GLP-1 drug semaglutide extended lifespan in healthy older mice by tempering detrimental effects of aging.

  • "Most chronic diseases are deeply rooted in the aging process," said Rafael de Cabo, Ph.D., a senior investigator at the NIH's National Institute on Aging. He noted clinical benefits are expected if GLP-1 agonists slow aging.
  • Future clinical investigations, such as the recent post-hoc analysis of the SLIM LIVER trial, are necessary to determine human efficacy. Researchers caution these findings do not imply similar results could be achieved immediately in humans.
