NYPD Releases Bodycam of Aftermath of ICE Shooting in Bronx
Officers carried the wounded suspect to a hospital after bystanders shouted that ICE shot him, while federal officials said he drove toward agents.
The New York Police Department released body-camera footage Friday of Thursday's shooting in Marble Hill, Bronx, clarifying that NYPD officers were not involved in the ICE-involved incident.
Federal agents were conducting a targeted enforcement operation at about 4 p.m. when Belgal, driving with a 5-year-old boy, refused to exit his vehicle and accelerated into two ICE vehicles.
While agents handcuffed Belgal, who sustained a "superficially" neck wound, bystanders shouted "ICE shot him" before NYPD officers responded to a 911 call and transported him to the hospital.
Marcos Charles, acting executive associate director for Homeland Security Investigations, stated agents fired because they believed their lives were in danger; the agency plans to prosecute Belgal.
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin blamed New York's sanctuary policies for Belgal's previous release and ordered his transfer to a detention facility outside the city.
