York Man Captures Breathtaking ‘Ring of Fire’ Eclipse on Majorca Holiday

- Paul Mortz, a York photographer, captured a stunning annular eclipse from a hotel balcony in Can Pastilla, Majorca, as it unfolded above the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range.
- Mortz, who runs a tattoo studio in York, used a Sony A74 camera and Tamron 50-400mm lens to document the phenomenon as a member of The Press Camera Club connecting photographers across York and North and East Yorkshire.
- Describing the scene as "like something from a science fiction movie," Mortz observed the sun's corona, Baily's Beads, and the famous Diamond Ring effect unfolding over 90 seconds.
- "Thousands of people were gathered on the beach in front of our hotel and everyone cheered when the Diamond Ring appeared," Mortz said; he and Hilary called it "absolutely mind-blowing."
- More than 2,500 readers have joined The Press Camera Club on Facebook to share work and compete in monthly challenges, with the group encouraging followers to engage on Instagram.
