Security video captures elephant’s great escape from zoo enclosure
Alice escaped through a weak gate section under repair and was safely recalled within 10 minutes, highlighting the zoo's quick response and ongoing habitat upgrades.
- On Sunday morning, Alice, a 52-year-old Asian elephant at BioPark Zoo in Albuquerque, escaped her habitat and wandered into a public area before safely returning to her enclosure.
- The fence section Alice escaped through had not been updated in nearly 20 years, officials reported. She exited via a welded gate in the water pond section before trampling a bamboo fence.
- BioPark Zoo staff responded to the escape in just 10 minutes using the recall method Alice is trained with. The staff simply calls and Alice follows.
- Brandon Gibson, director of the BioPark, confirmed the damaged water pond section is now repaired and reinforced with pillars and steel, upgrading it to be 'Alice proof.'
- Staff are inspecting other habitats for potential weak spots using tax funds, and Gibson noted the facility is monitoring the perimeter daily to ensure continued safety.
