HUD Creates Hotline for Illegal Immigrants Living in Public Housing

HUD's new hotline allows Memphis public housing residents to report crime and immigration violations to protect over 9,700 households, HUD said.

  • On Monday, Scott Turner, Secretary of the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, announced a new tip line for reporting crime in Memphis public housing at a Memphis Safe Task Force event.
  • Policy changes including citizenship data collection prompted Turner to create the hotline after declaring public housing should be a sanctuary for American citizens, not illegal immigrants.
  • The hotline can be reached at 800-374-3735 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., with an anonymous web tip form available anytime for reporting crimes and issues related to HUD residents.
  • HUD said a safe community starts with safe housing, and the Memphis Housing Authority serves more than 9,700 households and receives over $1.7M in federal rental assistance, Turner said.
  • The launch coincides with federal raids in Memphis as U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland directed DOJ collaboration, attended by officials including Sen. Bill Hagerty and the U.S. Marshals Service.
