Second suspect sought in shooting of off-duty Border Patrol agent
NEW YORK CITY, JUL 21 – Two undocumented immigrants with extensive criminal records were arrested after an attempted robbery and shooting of an off-duty Customs and Border Protection officer, sparking criticism of sanctuary policies.
- On Monday morning, authorities arrested Cristian Aybar Berroa, law enforcement officials said, after the off-duty U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer was ambushed late Saturday beneath the George Washington Bridge.
- Under Biden-era border and city policies, two men with deportation orders remained free, DHS said.
- In the shootout, two men on a moped approached the off-duty CBP officer, one firing, and DHS reported the shooter was wounded and arrested after seeking hospital treatment.
- In response, Border czar Tom Homan vowed `flood the zone` with ICE agents, while Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem called the suspects `scum of the earth`.
- DHS data shows assault on federal immigration officers are up 830%, DHS said, and ICE plans increased presence with identity-concealing measures in New York.
