SEC to Require Mandatory Sports Gambling Education for All Athletes
The conference says the video will explain betting risks, NCAA and SEC rules and reporting steps as legal wagering continues to expand.
On Wednesday, The Southeastern Conference announced that all student-athletes must complete a mandatory gambling education video before competing in the 2026-27 athletic season.
SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey cited rapid expansion of legalized sports gambling and recent incidents involving college and professional athletes as reasons the issue became a "high-priority initiative."
Approximately 58% of people ages 18 to 22 participate in sports betting, rising to 67% among students on college campuses; roughly $12 billion was wagered on SEC games during the 2025-26 academic year.
This new training supplements existing measures including IC360, a real-time monitoring platform, and an anonymous sports gambling tip line the conference established earlier this year.
The SEC continues to expand integrity efforts, including athlete availability reporting requirements for football, basketball, and baseball, reflecting the league's commitment to ensuring competition integrity across all member institutions.
