SEC Fines Mark Pope After Comments About Officiating Following Loss to Auburn

Mark Pope was fined for violating SEC sportsmanship bylaws after publicly criticizing officiating following Kentucky's narrow loss to Auburn, the SEC said.

  • On Tuesday, the SEC announced a public reprimand and a $25,000 fine to Kentucky coach Mark Pope after his comments following the Feb. 21 loss at Auburn.
  • A late offensive foul on Collin Chandler gave Auburn possession with 14 seconds left, leading to Elyjah Freeman's put-back with 1.2 seconds for a 75-74 win.
  • Reporters recorded a private exchange where Pope said `Mitch, if those MFers try to fine me, screw them`, after his on-record remark about referees. Pope said, `Well, we're not allowed to talk about the referees`.
  • The loss left the Wildcats with their third defeat in a row after winning eight of nine games, and with just over two weeks until the SEC Tournament, Kentucky sits tied for sixth with an 8-6 conference record.
  • The result also provided Auburn with a fifth Quad 1 victory and helped stave off NCAA bubble talk, according to BracketMatrix.
