The Peanut Butter Standoff: Cartoon Graffiti Takes Over Melbourne Bridge
Police said 13 charges include conduct endangering life after the man scaled the bridge, spray-painted graffiti and posted the stunt online.
On Tuesday, Jack Gibson-Burrell, a 22-year-old from East Geelong, surrendered to police after scaling Melbourne's 140-metre Bolte Bridge, ending an eight-hour standoff sparked by spray-painting a large 'Pam the Bird' tag.
Gibson-Burrell is a notorious graffiti artist previously charged with 209 offences related to his 'Pam the Bird' tag, with authorities alleging his vandalism of heritage-listed landmarks caused about $700,000 in damages.
During the standoff, Gibson-Burrell posted taunting messages on Instagram, demanding a "PB and J sandwich" and lower taxes, while police deployed a "significant number" of resources causing "considerable cost to the public."
Following his peaceful surrender, police charged Gibson-Burrell with 13 offences, including burglary and conduct endangering life; he was remanded in custody after an after-hours court session Tuesday evening.
Lawyer Micky Milardovic did not apply for bail, citing existing bail conditions Gibson-Burrell faced during these alleged offenses; the accused will next appear in court on September 29 for a committal mention.
