Scouts Canada selling historic Quebec camp it has owned for more than 100 years

MILLE-ISLES, QUEBEC, JUL 18 – More than 80% of the Tamaracouta Scout Reserve will be preserved for conservation, while part will be developed for eco-tourism, ensuring public access and youth engagement.

  • July 18, 2025 Scouts Canada sold the Tamaracouta Scout Reserve north of Montreal to Eric Desroches, partnering with the Nature Conservancy of Canada and the town of Mille-Isles.
  • Originally established more than 110 years ago, the Tamaracouta Scout Reserve closed in 2019 after 'years of successive financial hardship and looming costly repairs,' Scouts Canada said.
  • After years of abandonment, vandals struck key features and the president of a citizens' group warned the site risked sale to a developer and habitat degradation.
  • According to Scouts Canada, the new owner will preserve over 80 per cent of the land while honouring the property's legacy and creating future opportunities for Quebec youth.
  • Karine Peloffy said `It's right in the middle of an eco-corridor that can allow wildlife to keep existing in a somewhat rapidly developing area,` adding that she is 'cautiously optimistic' but seeks proof of land preservation and public access plans.
