Scott Hastings: Scotland rugby great dies at 61
The former Scotland captain won 65 caps and helped secure the nation’s 1990 Grand Slam before later becoming a broadcaster.
On Sunday, Scotland rugby legend Scott Hastings died at age 61 after undergoing cancer treatment. The Scottish Rugby Union announced he passed away peacefully at Western General Hospital ICU surrounded by family.
Hastings had been receiving treatment for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma since his 2022 diagnosis. His children, Corey and Kerry-Anne Hastings, stated he "deteriorated extremely quickly" following complications with his treatment.
A Scotland great with 65 caps, Hastings helped secure a 1990 Grand Slam victory over England. He also toured twice with the British and Irish Lions in 1989 and 1993 alongside his brother Gavin.
His passing on Sunday coincided with the birthday of his late wife, Jenny, who died 18 months ago after going missing at Wardie Bay. The family requested privacy to process their grief.
After his playing career ended with Watsonians, Hastings became a popular television commentator and pundit. Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend praised his "passion, confidence and aggression," noting his lasting influence on teammates.
