Commonwealth Games Update Issued After Fire in Glasgow City Centre
A fire starting in a vape shop destroyed a historic building and forced closure of Glasgow Central Station, causing major disruption to rail and road transport, ScotRail said.
- On Sunday, a blaze on Union Street, Glasgow city centre tore through adjoining premises and destroyed a historic building block.
- A ground-floor shop fire quickly spread through neighbouring premises after emergency services were called at around 3.46pm to a vape shop in a four-storey building.
- At its peak, 18 fire engines and over 60 firefighters responded while Paul Sweeney said the Forsyth House, a B-listed Victorian building , partially collapsed.
- Network Rail confirmed on Tuesday that low-level platforms will reopen on Wednesday, March 11, while Glasgow Central Station’s high-level platforms remain closed this week.
- The Scottish Government pledged recovery support and said the Commonwealth Games will go ahead, while police urged drivers to plan journeys amid Glasgow city centre road closures and bus diversions.
