Sikh Activist Jagtar Singh Johal Released From Indian Prison
He was detained for nearly nine years without conviction and still faces separate charges that could carry the death penalty, his family said.
On Thursday, October 1, Scottish Sikh activist Jagtar Singh Johal walked free from Tihar Jail in Delhi after his lawyers secured a habeas corpus petition, ending nine years of detention.
Indian authorities arrested Johal in 2017 on alleged terror offenses, claiming he supported the Khalistan Liberation Force; a UN panel later described his imprisonment as a "profound miscarriage of justice."
Although the Delhi High Court granted bail last month, prison officials initially refused to release the 39-year-old, saying they were seeking "clarification" from the Ministry of Home Affairs.
His brother, Gurpreet Singh Johal, said he "didn't dare to believe it" until seeing his brother walk free, adding, "I'll sleep well tonight, knowing that he's not behind bars."
Despite his release, Johal remains on trial facing potential capital punishment, with stringent bail conditions requiring him to surrender his passport and refrain from public comments about his case.
