Nashville Mayor Moves to Use Eminent Domain to Block Data Center Next to Nashville Zoo
Mayor Freddie O'Connell plans condemnation legislation as Metro seeks to block a 69,000-square-foot data center project.
On Monday, Nashville Mayor Freddie O'Connell filed legislation seeking eminent domain for the property where DC BLOX intends to construct a data center near the Nashville Zoo.
Amid an online petition with over 500,000 signatures, zoo officials and residents argue the 69,000-square-foot facility's mechanical noise and light exposure could harm sensitive animals like clouded leopards.
MarketStreet Enterprises holds a $23 million contract to sell the land, while Metro Councilmember Courtney Johnston and the zoo challenged the city's "general office" zoning classification through Board of Zoning Appeals appeals.
DC BLOX attorney Doug Sloan told Axios that "Metro has not identified a lawful public use that would justify taking this property by eminent domain," challenging the legality of the mayor's move.
Metro Council may consider the eminent domain legislation as late-filed business on July 7, as the Tennessee Valley Authority projects data center demand could double by 2030 amid separate council efforts to limit development.
