Largest-ever 3D map of the universe shows 47 million galaxies, from the Milky Way to 'cosmic noon' — Space photo of the week
The largest 3D map of the universe, created based on data from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument, shows 47 million galaxies in stunning detail.
Scientists Unveil the Universe’s Largest 3D Map, Offering Unprecedented Insights into Dark Energy and Cosmic Expansion
The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) has completed the most comprehensive 3D map of the universe ever created, pushing the boundaries of our understanding of dark energy. Published across two papers in the prestigious Astronomy & Astrophysics journal, the results from DESI’s five-year…
DESI completes planned 3D map of the universe and continues exploring
The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) has successfully completed the largest high-resolution 3D map of the universe ever made, a major milestone in understanding the force driving cosmic expansion. The milestone was reached when DESI's 5,000 fiber-optic sensors captured their final scheduled observations, targeting a region of sky near the Little Dipper.
After five years of continuous observation, the DESI instrument collected data on 47 million galaxies, six times more than expected. These data suggest that black energy, long regarded as an immutable constant, could evolve over time. A discovery that challenges the fate of the Universe taught since 1998. More
How did DESI map the universe in 3D?
DESI completes a milestone 3D map of the universe The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) has finished completing what’s described as the largest high resolution three dimensional map of the universe ever made. The project is a major step toward understanding how cosmic expansion and “dark…
