In 2009, Icelandic engineers accidentally drilled directly into a magma chamber at 900°C under the Krafla volcano. This error gave rise to the first geothermal well "improved by magma" in the world, producing overheated steam at 450°C capable of generating up to ten times more electricity than a conventional well before its closure.
