Scientists in Barbados overturn hundreds of rocks to rediscover world's smallest-known snake
BARBADOS, JUL 23 – The Barbados threadsnake, measuring just 3 to 4 inches, was found after a year-long search and is listed as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
- On Wednesday, the Re:wild conservation group announced the rediscovery of the Barbados threadsnake during an ecological survey in collaboration with the Barbados Ministry of the Environment and National Beautification.
- Previously unseen, the Barbados threadsnake was listed among lost species, and scientists feared extinction amid habitat threats.
- In central Barbados, field researchers measure the Barbados threadsnake at 7.5–10 centimeters long, and as thin as a spaghetti noodle.
- The Conserving Barbados’ Endemic Reptiles project now plans to continue surveying under the CBER project to develop conservation strategies to protect both the snake and its critical habitat.
- With 98% of primary forest cleared, the rediscovery underscores the importance of protecting Barbados’s remaining habitats for endemic species.
