Scientists Find Golden Retrievers and Owners Share Same Behavior
The study identified 12 genetic regions influencing dog behavior that overlap with human genes related to intelligence and emotional sensitivity, based on data from over 1,300 golden retrievers.
- Researchers reported a genome-wide comparison in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and said Dr Eleanor Raffan, `'The findings are really striking- they provide strong evidence that humans and golden retrievers have shared genetic roots for their behaviour.'`
- Using the Golden Retriever Lifetime Study , researchers assessed over 1,300 dogs between three and seven, with owners completing detailed questionnaires covering over 70 behaviors and categorizing them into 14 groups.
- Researchers identified specific genes such as PTPN1 linked to dog aggression and human intelligence, ROMO1 tied to trainability and emotional sensitivity, and variants like HUNK and ASCC3 connecting dog nervousness to human worry and mood swings.
- For dog owners, recognizing genetic and emotional components may change training, while veterinarians could tailor treatments using links between canine fearfulness and human anxiety genes.
- The research suggests shared emotional wiring between humans and golden retrievers as these overlaps influence anxiety, intelligence, and how long we ruminate on embarrassing moments.

The golden retriever stands out for being sociable animals, affectionate and very friendly with both people and other dogs. Thus, they are characterized by their enthusiasm to play and their ability to incorporate orders quickly. Now, a team from Cambridge University, in the UK, managed to locate a dozen genes in this breed that also participate in processes linked to temperament, cognitive processes and mental health in humans. The work was diss…
Golden retriever and human behaviour may be linked by the same genes – new research
PeopleImages/ShutterstockHumans have probably shared their homes with dogs ever since they first settled. So it could be argued that there is no such thing as “human society” without including animals as part of it. Our long shared history with dogs has even be described as a form of co-evolution. And a new study my colleagues at Cambridge and I published shows golden retrievers and humans seem to share a genetic basis for at least some behaviou…
The Surprising Genetic Link Between Aggression In Dogs And Human Intelligence
Scientists studying over 1,000 golden retrievers have discovered many of the genes that influence dog behavior also shape human personality, intelligence, and mental health. The post The Surprising Genetic Link Between Aggression In Dogs And Human Intelligence appeared first on Study Finds.
Whether a Golden Retriever is fearful or aggressive is obviously related to the same genes that shape human behavior.
