Research led by Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich, Germany, shows that a terrestrial micro-organism can grow and generate methane in conditions that reproduce the extreme chemistry of the underground ocean of Saturn's Enceladus moon, even with a pH of up to 11. The result does not show that life exists on the satellite, but expands the known conditions under which a microbial metabolism could function outside the Earth.
