Physicists at Stanford University have used ultrashort X-ray pulses to directly observe for the first time how the movement of electrons initiates and directs chemical reactions. The achievement could pave the way for the development of new drugs and cleaner chemical processes, providing insight into how chemical processes can be controlled at the atomic level in the future.
