School choice Yass Prize awards continue, $20M worth of grants awarded nationwide
Education providers nationwide can apply as 16 alumni organizations receive more than $20 million in grants and interest-free loans to expand school choice models.
Education providers nationwide have until June 1 at noon Eastern Time to apply for a $1 million Yass Prize school choice award, with the winner announced October 6 in Philadelphia.
Launched five years ago, the Yass Prize transformed from a competitive award into a collaborative community where previous winners now work together on education innovation, according to founding director Caroline Allen.
Eleven previous Yass Prize winners received grants and interest-free loans this year to "scale their outstanding models," with five awarded grants supporting program growth across 13 states including California, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, North and South Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas and West Virginia.
Allen emphasized the unexpected benefit of grantees collaborating as a community, explaining the foundation "didn't anticipate that grantees would learn and be empowered by one another" while strengthening individual schools.
Yass Prize Founder Janine Yass positioned the $20 million in grants—translating to more than 37,000 student opportunities—as sending "a clear signal to states" that families demand policy changes supporting alternative education options.
