Scaleway to build AMD-powered AI supercomputer in Sweden

The system will be open to startups and businesses across Europe, with Scaleway citing Sweden’s low-carbon electricity and AI sector as key advantages.

  • On Tuesday, French cloud provider Scaleway announced plans to build an AI supercomputer in Sweden using AMD Instinct MI355X chips and open a separate computing site in Copenhagen powered by Nvidia HGX B300 systems.
  • Scaleway CEO Damien Lucas stated high-performance computing is a 'strategic priority for European organizations,' citing low-carbon electricity, strong tech sectors, and cool climates as selection criteria for both locations.
  • The Swedish facility will be Europe's first commercial AMD-based supercomputer, utilizing the open-source ROCm software ecosystem as an alternative to Nvidia's proprietary CUDA, while Copenhagen targets businesses requiring EU-compliant hosting.
  • Supercomputer builder Bull, partnering within the AION consortium, called the contract a 'positive step' to 'enhance Europe's AI capabilities' as the expansion boosts Scaleway's capacity across northern Europe.
  • Tele2 business head Stefan Trampus noted the project 'sends a clear signal' about Sweden's AI infrastructure appeal, positioning Scaleway to compete with US cloud firms Oracle and Vultr in the European market.
