Delimitation in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh only After 2026 Census: SC

INDIA, JUL 25 – The Supreme Court ruled delimitation in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana must wait until after the 2026 census, in line with constitutional amendments freezing changes until then.

  • On Friday the Supreme Court in New Delhi dismissed a petition seeking delimitation in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, declining to order more seats.
  • The bench noted that Article 170 bars delimitation until the first census after 2026, a freeze reaffirmed by the 84th and 87th amendments.
  • The bench of Justices Surya Kant and N. Kotiswar Singh rejected the argument that excluding Andhra Pradesh and Telangana was arbitrary, warning it would `open floodgates` for parity claims.
  • In a statement Reddy pointed out, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy slammed the Centre for double standards, noting it had said delimitation would follow the 2026 census.
  • In March this year the Telangana Assembly urged the Centre to increase seats to 153 and called for constitutional amendments to strengthen democracy.
