Investigation Continuing After 2 North Carolina Deputies Shot
Both deputies were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries after returning fire, and authorities said the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is investigating.
On Friday, two Lenoir County deputies were shot while responding to reports of gunfire on Jonestown Road in Pink Hill. Lenoir County Sheriff Jackie Rogers confirmed both deputies were transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
After 11 a.m., deputies arrived at the 700 block of Jonestown Road following reports of a man shooting at passersby. The suspect emerged from a home and opened fire, striking one deputy in the stomach, according to Sheriff Rogers.
Following the initial exchange, the gunman retreated into the home and fired again, hitting a second deputy, Rogers said. Law enforcement used armored vehicles and a drone to locate the suspect inside the residence.
Both wounded deputies were taken to ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville for treatment. SBI Public Information Officer Chad Flowers confirmed the gunman was found dead inside a bedroom after agents entered the residence.
The North Carolina State Bureau is leading the investigation, with authorities confirming there is no remaining threat to the public. Officials asked residents to avoid the area near Jonestown Road and Highway 258 while the investigation continues.
