BBC Teatime host to replace Scott Mills on Radio 2

Cox will become only the second woman to host the flagship show, which reaches about 6.5 million weekly listeners, BBC Radio 2 said.

  • Sara Cox will become the new host of the BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show, the BBC announced, moving from her current weekday teatime programme later this year.
  • The vacancy arose after the BBC fired Scott Mills last month following a police investigation into alleged historic sexual offences; Mills faced no charges after the Crown Prosecution Service determined insufficient evidence existed.
  • Radio 2 chief Helen Thomas praised Cox, 51, for her "trademark warmth and humour" and noted she raised £11.5 million for Children in Need last year during a fundraising challenge.
  • Gary Davies, interim host, has covered the breakfast slot since Mills was dismissed in March, while Cox will leave her teatime programme to take up the prestigious role.
  • Hosting the Breakfast Show remains one of British radio's most prestigious roles, with a legacy tracing to Sir Terry Wogan's 28-year tenure; Cox described the move as "a bit of a full circle.
