Santos ships first gas from Barossa project after years of delays
Santos shipped its first liquefied natural gas cargo from Barossa after a year of delays, aiming to boost production by up to 30% by 2027, CEO Kevin Gallagher said.
- Darwin saw the first Barossa LNG cargo loaded, announced today, and shipped to Japan’s Sakai terminal, following delays and project setbacks.
- After months of delay and legal challenges, the Barossa project missed its original first half of 2025 start, with pipeline works paused in 2023 after First Nations elders on the Tiwi Islands initiated court action.
- Quarterly figures show Santos produced 22.3 million barrels of oil equivalent and reported $1.2 billion in sales revenue, with Mr Gallagher saying, `We have taken a very considered approach to the final stages of commissioning`.
- Investors drove Santos shares more than four per cent higher to $6.36 by 2pm AEDT on Thursday after the report, while analysts warned Santos must prove it can ramp and sustain Barossa output after a downgrade to expected 2027 production.
