Santander to shut 44 branches and put 291 jobs at risk
- Santander UK announced plans to close 44 branches across the UK, publishing a list with affected towns and closure dates.
- Santander said the move responds to customers increasingly banking online, with 96% of transactions now digital and branch transactions falling by 13% last year.
- Following the changes, the total network will consist of 305 branches including 244 full-service, 19 counter-free, 36 reduced-hour branches, six Work Cafés, and 111 Santander Locals.
- Approximately 291 colleagues would be placed at risk of redundancy if proposals proceed; Santander said there will be redeployment opportunities and formal consultation with unions.
- Last July, UK boss Mike Regnier said they had cut around 2,000 roles over the previous year, and Santander stressed ongoing investments, including refurbishing over 220 sites and planning more than 30 in the coming year.
