10 Arrested in Santa Monica Retail Theft Bust
- On Thursday, officials announced that 35 individuals involved in a large-scale retail theft operation in New York City from 2017 to 2022 have been convicted and sentenced.
- A multiyear investigation by the Organized Crime Task Force and NYPD found that ringleader Roni Rubinov and accomplices obtained stolen merchandise and EBT cards from thieves in exchange for cash.
- Stolen goods, including gift cards, cash, and items from major retailers, were brought to Rubinov's pawn shops then resold for profit through employees on an eBay store called Treasure-Deals-USA.
- Rubinov was convicted of enterprise corruption, sentenced to 2.5 to 7.5 years in state prison, forfeited $2.1 million, and ordered to pay over $3.1 million in restitution, while all 35 co-conspirators were also convicted.
- The case highlights a national surge in retail theft, with over 1.15 million shoplifting instances reported in 2023 and estimated losses of $45 billion last year projected to exceed $53 billion by 2027.
