Sanders Calls for Pause on AI Data Centers
Sanders warns AI data centers use electricity equal to millions of homes and threaten jobs, democracy, and public resources amid rapid billionaire-driven expansion.
- On Tuesday, Sen. Bernie Sanders called for a halt to new AI data-center construction and said he will press Congress for a legislative moratorium.
- Sen. Sanders pointed to major projects including a $165 billion data-center build in Abilene, Texas by OpenAI and Oracle and a Meta site using electricity equal to 1.2 million homes.
- Citing community protests, Sanders warned millions of children are becoming socially isolated and emotionally dependent on AI, while saying `In community after community, Americans are fighting back against the data centers being built by some of the largest and most powerful corporations in the world`.
- On Wednesday, Sen. Bernie Sanders urged opponents to keep pressuring local, state and federal leaders and argued Congress is not seriously addressing the issue, while Sen. Elizabeth Warren and two other Democratic senators recently questioned big tech companies about residential energy bills.
- Experts note that data centers already account for about 5% of U.S. electricity use, with electricity bills surging this year in northern Virginia, Illinois, and Ohio, while MIT estimates AI could replace up to 11.7% of American workers.
