San Leandro police chief placed on leave after being charged in 2025 hit-and-run collision on Interstate 580
Prosecutors say the chief left after sideswiping a car, and she faces up to 6 months in jail and a $1,000 fine.
On Tuesday, Alameda County District Attorney Ursula Jones Dickson charged San Leandro Police Chief Angela Averiett with misdemeanor hit-and-run stemming from a May 19, 2025, collision on Interstate 580 near Dublin.
Prosecutors allege Averiett clipped a vehicle while driving an unmarked Jeep with emergency lights and left the scene; Averiett denies knowingly leaving the collision, citing a medical emergency and claiming she was unaware of any contact.
The California Highway Patrol initially declined to issue citations after their investigation, but Jones Dickson launched a review after media reports emerged in March, finding sufficient evidence to file charges.
San Leandro placed Averiett on administrative leave yesterday, and Assistant Chief Luis Torres will serve as acting chief while the city seeks an interim replacement.
Averiett faces up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine if convicted; her arraignment on June 18 marks the second time in a year a city leader has faced criminal proceedings.
