Officials tranquilize mountain lion loose in San Francisco, later free him into the wild

A two-year-old, 77-pound mountain lion was safely captured after roaming Pacific Heights and released back into the Santa Cruz Mountains by wildlife officials.

  • Early Wednesday, California Department of Fish and Wildlife returned the mountain lion known as 157M to the Santa Cruz Mountains, posting video of it leaving its crate and bounding into the woods.
  • Experts say the animal likely got lost while dispersing from its mother as a two-year-old male raised about 80km south of San Francisco.
  • A state biologist fired one dart from above and a zoo veterinarian shot two more to sedate the mountain lion, then placed it on an orange tarp for a medical exam, according to officials.
  • Neighbors watched from windows and rooftops as officials shut down California Street and a nearby school went into lockdown during the response, officials said `the Puma Project will let the public track 157M soon`.
  • Biologists say such mountain lion visits to San Francisco are rare, with the last sighting five years ago, while Puma Project researchers confirmed 157M was tagged previously and refitted with a collar Tuesday by Richie King.
