'This Is It' | Hiker Survives Harrowing Grizzly Attack at Glacier National Park
Crago was airlifted to a hospital and has undergone multiple surgeries after the attack, while a fundraiser for his medical bills nears its goal.
On May 28, San Diego resident Daniel Crago was attacked by a grizzly bear while hiking the Grinnell Glacier Trail in Montana's Glacier National Park during what was supposed to be his final day of vacation.
After hiking more than 20 miles throughout the week, Crago spotted a bear cub near the trail, then noticed a larger grizzly bear "no more than 15 feet above on the hill," according to Crago.
The bear charged and bit Crago's arm; fortunately, two nearby hikers, including a doctor, provided immediate medical assistance until emergency responders arrived and airlifted him to a hospital.
Crago has undergone multiple surgeries and faces at least one more procedure as he recovers, while a fundraiser covering his medical costs has nearly reached its goal.
Despite the trauma, Crago remains optimistic about full recovery and retains his love for the outdoors; research published in Nature shows a little more than 14 percent of grizzly attacks prove fatal.
