Samsung SDI Signs First EV Battery Supply Deal with Mercedes-Benz

- On Monday, Samsung SDI signed a multiyear contract to supply high-nickel batteries for Mercedes-Benz's next-generation electric SUVs and coupe models, marking the first EV battery supply agreement between the Korean manufacturer and German carmaker.
- Samsung SDI CEO Choi Joo-sun and Mercedes-Benz Group Chairman Ola Kallenius held a signing ceremony in Seoul, where industry officials estimate the confidential deal's value at approximately $6.7 billion.
- The nickel-cobalt-manganese batteries feature high energy density, extended driving ranges, and proprietary safety technologies. "This partnership brings together the innovative DNA of both companies," a Samsung SDI official said.
- Samsung SDI now supplies battery technology to three leading German automakers, including BMW and Audi, with its existing Hungarian plant likely supplying these batteries, denying speculation about new European sites.
- The companies pledged to expand cooperation in future mobility, including joint development of next-generation battery technology, following Kallenius's November 2025 Korea trip that yielded a $1.4 billion LG Energy Solution deal.
