Samsung Electronics Shares Fall After Shareholder Return Announcement

Investors wanted clearer buyback details and a larger share of Samsung’s AI-driven cash windfalls, analysts said.

  • Samsung Electronics shares fell 8% on Monday after the company announced a record $79 billion shareholder-return plan that disappointed investors expecting greater clarity on share buybacks.
  • The South Korean chipmaker said this year's shareholder returns will range from 90 trillion won to 110 trillion won, including 30 trillion won in cash dividends. Returns are five times the 2020 record.
  • Unlike Hynix, which announced plans last week to buy back and cancel 40 trillion won in treasury shares, Samsung did not announce share cancellations. Eugene Securities analyst Sohn In-joon called the omission "disappointing."
  • Morgan Stanley noted in a report that the capital returns were "slightly below expectations." The benchmark KOSPI index fell 1.5% alongside Samsung's 8% decline.
  • Samsung faces a January decision on allocating the remaining 60 trillion won to 80 trillion won, with its next capital-return framework taking effect next year. The company continues committing 50% of free cash flow to shareholders over the three-year period.
