US Deploys Emergency Cyber Patches After DHS Reveals Salt Typhoon Breach

UNITED STATES, JUL 16 – Salt Typhoon accessed sensitive military and personal data in a prolonged breach, gathering network diagrams and credentials that risk further intrusions, according to a Department of Homeland Security memo.

  • Salt Typhoon, a Chinese state-sponsored hacking group, infiltrated an unnamed U.S. state's Army National Guard network from March through December 2024, compromising critical systems.
  • Salt Typhoon's campaign infiltrated U.S. telecom systems for over a year, described as `the most active and persistent cyber threat` by the U.S. intelligence community, and accessed private conversations of senior political figures.
  • According to the DHS memo, the hackers stole network diagrams, credentials and service member data, using sophisticated lateral movement across systems.
  • He added, 'all US forces must now assume their networks are compromised', Gary Barlet said, urging accelerated Zero Trust adoption and breach containment strategies.
  • In January, the U.S. Treasury Department imposed sanctions on a Sichuan-based MSS support firm, experts warn that without stronger zero-trust and MFA similar hacks could recur, and authorities are conducting forensic analyses to assess reconnaissance and backdoors.
