Salmonella outbreak linked to pistachios sickens 52 across Canada
CANADA, AUG 7 – The outbreak involves Salmonella Havana and Mbandaka strains, with 9 hospitalizations and a likely undercount of cases due to reporting delays, officials said.
- On Aug. 5, 2025, the Public Health Agency of Canada reported 52 confirmed salmonella infections across four provinces, including nine hospitalizations and no deaths.
- Products from Habibi, Al Mokhtar Food Centre and Dubai brands, distributed in Ontario and Quebec between June 11 and July 9, bore an April 1, 2027 best-before date, and outbreak strains were found in Habibi samples.
- PHAC data show patients range from two to 89 years old with 75% women, symptoms appear within six to 72 hours after exposure, and reporting can span 15 to 55 days.
- Amid the outbreak, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency triggered recent days’ recalls of Al Mokhtar Food Centre pistachios, Habibi pistachio kernels, and Dubai chocolate products, urging consumers to check for and remove affected items.
