Salmon Prairie School Closure Reflects Growing Strain on Small Montana Districts

At the end of the 2025-2026 school year, Salmon Prairie School's board of trustees voted for the school to enter non-operational status, a designation that means it won’t be serving students or having classes for the year. The board’s vote — and the factors that led to it — leaves the Seeley-Swan Valley without a one-room schoolhouse that has taught students in the area for more than 100 years.
