Sainsbury’s to increase British salad produce amid drought fears abroad
The agreements aim to secure year-round British produce and expand cucumber availability into winter for the first time, Sainsbury’s said.
- Sainsbury signed 10-year partnerships with Evesham Vale Growers and Thanet Earth to secure steady supplies of tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers, bolstering its supply chain against weather-based shocks.
- In early 2023, supermarkets imposed limits of three on produce packs after extreme weather in Africa and Europe caused widespread shortages on UK shelves, prompting demand for more resilient supply chains.
- Thanet Earth will grow cucumbers through winter at its Kent site using supplementary heat and CO2 management. Rob James, technical director there, said: "Working with Sainsbury in this way means we can plan ahead with more certainty."
- Benefits appear on shelves this summer with the launch of the new Taste the Difference British Salad Selection 800g box, highlighting increased British-grown produce availability.
- Hannah O'Reilly, category director of produce at Sainsbury, emphasized innovation's necessity, stating: "With our changing weather, it is more important than ever to find new, innovative solutions to make sure our customers can continue to enjoy the quality produce they want all year-round.
