Turkish households continue to suffer from prices that increase faster than wages as the month of Ramadan begins.
At the beginning of the month of fasting, the prices of basic foods for Ramadan in Turkey are around 35 percent higher than a year ago. Food inflation is particularly felt by low-income households.
Zeynep, a 65-year-old woman, says she can't: she can't retire and can't leave her two jobs, she's barely enough for anything. Zeynep, during the week, works serving teas in an office in central Istanbul. On weekends and some afternoons, she cleans houses. Her husband, suffering from diabetes, earns a very minimal pension and must make a living doing jobs in the neighborhood, whether it's home arrangements or small repairs.
