On Tuesday, South African police announced investigations into the deaths of two Mozambican men in Mossel Bay, while the Mozambique government claims five of its citizens were killed.
Violence swept through a KwaNonqaba settlement on Friday, where residents set more than 50 shacks on fire, with authorities arresting five people before two men died on Saturday.
Tensions have surged in South Africa as protesters blame undocumented migrants for crime and public service strain, with official figures estimating more than three million foreigners comprise about 5% of the population.
The Mozambique government alleged 800 citizens were "victims of xenophobic attacks," prompting 300 people to leave South Africa on Saturday, though police have not confirmed xenophobic motives.
Several African nations including Kenya and Zimbabwe have advised citizens to remain vigilant as Ghana recently evacuated hundreds of its nationals, while a protest group set a June 30 departure deadline.
