Minister of Defense Boris Pistorius plans a draft law for a new compulsory military service model. From 2026 on, voluntary recruits will be trained for half a year. The aim is to increase the number of reservists.
At the end of August, the Minister of Defence intends to introduce his law for the new, initially voluntary military service in the cabinet. The draft is intended to return to compulsory military service – as a last resort.
Germany plans to introduce voluntary military service, which could become mandatory if necessary, as it worries about Russia. Defense minister wants legislation passed by end of next month, with first recruits to begin training from May 2026


Minister of Defence Boris Pistorius wants to recruit some 114.000 military personnel by 2029. This is evident from the cornerstones of his draft law on new military service. However, whether this succeeds remains open. For the SPD politician is still afraid of a duty.
