40 degrees and more: Extreme heat makes a normal life in southern Europe almost impossible at present. It favours forest fires, in many places the water is scarce. Italy even reacts with work bans.
Inflamed by persistent water scarcity, drought and heat records, devastating forest fires rag in southern Europe, from the Iberian Peninsula to Italy and Croatia to Greece and Turkey.
On the Mediterranean, the heat sets new high marks – and again brings increased fire risk. In Germany, however, no records fall. But even below 40 degrees is still extreme.
Unprecedented heat is causing major problems in France, Croatia, Italy, and Spain, while wildfire destruction across Europe has increased by 87 percent this year. Researchers estimate that an estimated 8,000 people are expected to die from the heat each year.
