Ryanair to make major change to oversize baggage rule
Ryanair says the higher payout will help staff catch fewer oversized bags as about 200,000 passengers a year face extra charges.
Ryanair Group CEO Michael O'Leary plans to increase staff bonuses for identifying oversized cabin bags from €2.50 to €3.50, strengthening enforcement of the airline's strict baggage rules before passengers board flights.
Announced last year, the scheme targets passengers attempting to bring "rucksacks" aboard flights; O'Leary stated around 200,000 Ryanair passengers annually are forced to pay €75 for non-compliant carry-on items.
To avoid charges, passengers must adhere to size limits with small personal bags restricted to 40cm by 30cm by 20cm, while staff receive commissions for every oversized bag flagged at the gate.
O'Leary claims that when passengers comply with bag rules, boarding speeds increase and flight delays decrease, noting 99.9% of the airline's 200 million passengers already follow the guidelines.
Beyond baggage enforcement, the CEO recently advocated for banning early-morning alcohol sales in airport bars, arguing these measures collectively improve passenger behavior and operational efficiency across Europe.
