Rwanda: Over 100 More Facilities Closed Amid Crackdown On Illicit Alcohol

Regulators ordered recalls and sales stops as officials said illicit alcohol has caused more than 50 deaths and left 100 people blind.

  • On August 3, the Rwanda FDA ordered the closure of 101 facilities and revoked their manufacturing licenses over illicit alcoholic beverage production, following nationwide regulatory inspections and compliance assessments.
  • Health officials reported over 50 deaths and 100 cases of blindness linked to illicit alcohol consumption, while the Rwanda Investigation Bureau holds over 50 suspects in custody for producing and distributing the products.
  • Minister of Health Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana reported that over 500 people sought medical treatment due to illicit alcohol, with over 95% of youth in rehabilitation centers linked to alcohol abuse.
  • Manufacturers have been instructed to "immediately initiate a full recall of the products" and submit reports within three working days, while distributors must return all stock to suppliers.
  • The Rwanda FDA continues its nationwide enforcement exercise and warned that failure to comply with directives will trigger additional enforcement measures; a second list of affected facilities will be issued soon.
