Russia’s return to G20 talks unsettles Europe as Iran and trade tensions loom
Russia's presence at the opening of G20 meetings in North Carolina sparked pushback from Europe on Monday, adding fresh tension to talks already clouded by the Iran war and US President Donald Trump's trade policies.
At the G20 Finance Ministers' meeting held in North Carolina, the Trump administration conducted a strict, disciplined approach while pressuring nations to join sanctions against Iran. Divisions within the G20 deepened due to issues regarding Russia's attendance and the exclusion of South Africa, while tensions with allies grappling with trade conflicts disrupted the atmosphere of the meeting.
"Personally, it has worked out for me and I still find it problematic to discuss issues such as global imbalances with a representative of an aggressor country that carries out daily brutal attacks against the civilian population. It is a matter of respect for the victims," he said in statements sent to the press.
The invitation to the Russian minister would have been addressed by the United States without prior involvement of the European counterparts, further fueling the tensions between Washington and Brussels
