Russian Mercenary Targets Ukrainian Artist in Warsaw
Poland said the suspect was recruited by a network tied to Russia’s Federal Security Service, and police arrested him before the attack, officials said.
- On Thursday, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed that authorities thwarted a Russian plot to assassinate Ukrainian American video blogger Slevin Dadyan, known as Kyivstoner, in Warsaw. A suspect was arrested near WoBoska Street on August 7.
- The Federal Security Service accused Dadyan of overseeing a drone smuggling plot targeting a defense enterprise in the Moscow region. Authorities placed him on a list of individuals involved in "extremist" and "terrorist" activities, though Dadyan denies these allegations.
- Tusk described the incident as "the first such situation in which someone on behalf of Russia decides to attack an American citizen in another NATO country," specifically on Polish territory. Polish police worked with the Internal Security Agency to uncover the plot.
- This attack marks part of a wider hybrid campaign Russia is waging against Western nations supporting Ukraine. Tusk warned that Polish authorities are preparing for similar attempts in the future as Moscow continues targeting individuals globally.
- The Warsaw plot follows a similar June case where a Georgian citizen killed a Russian government critic in BiaBa Podlaska. EU Commissioner for Defense Andrius Kubilius stated the incident should serve as a warning to Europe if member states do not take Russian threats seriously.
