Report: Second Victim Dies From 'Plague Outbreak' in Russia
Baikalsk urged residents to avoid Shelekhov after unofficial reports of a confirmed plague case and a deleted warning message.
Local media reported Tuesday that a second person has died from plague in Russia's Irkutsk region, though authorities have not publicly acknowledged this fatality amid mounting outbreak fears.
Laboratory worker Daria Shipilova, 28, died on October 2 after reportedly breaking a test tube containing live bacteria at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute in Siberia.
Authorities in Baikalsk warned residents on October 3 to avoid traveling to Shelekhov due to "unofficial information about a confirmed case of plague," while REN TV and Kommersant removed plague-related reports.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov urged the public to rely only on official Rospotrebnadzor statements, while US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called on Russia to disclose more information, monitoring the situation "hour by hour."
Neighboring Mongolia, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan have tightened health controls amid the reports, while online searches for "plague" surged 5,000 per cent from last year, according to The Times.
